Types of Plans

There are several types of health insurance policies available, including:

  • Indemnity Plans - These plans allow you to choose any healthcare provider you want, without a network or referral requirement. You'll pay for services upfront, and then submit a claim to the insurance company for reimbursement.

  • Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) Plans - These plans require you to choose a primary care physician (PCP) within a network of healthcare providers. Your PCP will manage your healthcare needs and refer you to specialists as needed. HMO plans typically have lower out-of-pocket costs than other plans.

  • Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) Plans - These plans allow you to choose from a network of healthcare providers, and you don't need a referral to see a specialist. PPO plans typically have higher out-of-pocket costs than HMO plans.

  • Point of Service (POS) Plans - These plans combine features of HMO and PPO plans. You'll choose a PCP within a network, but can also see out-of-network providers for a higher cost
